What I Have Learned

It is my hope that one-day families from diverse backgrounds see the importance of embracing their differences and be open to share insight on their culture, values, and beliefs with other families inside the classroom. I believe these could bridge the gap between families and staff, educate other families and children, help in bringing the community together, and serve as the basis for teaching understanding and acceptance of all.  I also believe the world would be a better place if families embrace differences instead of shielding them from today’s children.

One goal I would like to set in respect to the early childhood field would be to become more aware of resources, which could benefit diverse families and further my education in diversity and diverse groups. As an educator, I want to feel as if I am current with the issues and trends of the world. I believe by being aware of current events that I would become a better professional and individual.

I would like to express a big thanks of support to my colleagues these course. I have truly enjoyed learning new things from each of you and I feel as if I have been on a journey through each of your lives, both personally and professionally. I wish you all the best in future endeavors and Congrats to you all for making it thus far! YOU ALL ROCK!!!!!!!

  1. Sha'Keema,
I think that you set a great goal. Being aware of resources for children and families is very important to the early childhood field. I think that comes with experience and the more we learn about anti-bias education, the better resources we will become. Thank you for sharing in this course and helping me learn more about diversity, cultures and differences!

  2. Hi Sha'Keema,

I enjoyed and appreciated your hopes and goals. I love that you stated how families should help their children learn about diversity instead of shielding them from it. As a child, I was exposed to very little cultural diversity. My daughter has so many for opportunities to learn about and interact with different cultures. I have the honor of sharing what I am learning with her, as well as, learning from her and my students. They are an awesome resource! In addition, I am working with my colleagues to become more informed. I have enjoyed working with you! I wish you best wishes and many blessings! Cindy Rube

  3. Sha 'Keema,

There is a great deal to learn from families working with educators, I do agree it can help bridge the gap between families and cultures. We are many in this world and if we don't work together, how can we be a positive role model for our children and our students? Children are very curious, I'm sure parents think they are doing what's best for their child by sheltering them from certain information. I believe that's why we have so many bully's in the school and young people killing themselves as well as others. Thank you for sharing and best wishes to you.

  4. Sha'Keema-
This journey has been very exciting in regards to how much I have learned and continue to learn. Being a resource to others is a wonderful goal, and one that I also hope to accomplish as my layers unfold. I have learned a great deal from your willingness to expose your deepest thoughts and personal experiences. Good luck to you and hope to see you in our next journey...
    Thanks again,
    Tammy

  5. Hi Sha'Keema,
I enjoyed reading your blog this week and I especially enjoyed reading about your hope for diverse families. I know that I try to incorporate my students various cultures into the classroom but at times families are hesitant to share. I too hope that one day all families will feel accepted enough to allow teacher(s) and students to share in their culture as well.

I enjoyed learning from you through your blog and discussion postings throughout this course. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

  6. I agree, I think families learning to appreciate their diversity. I have found that some of my families refuse to use their native language in front of others. I try to encourage their differences.
