Your Personal Research Journey

The topic I chose for the simulation is diversity & building positive relationships. I would like to know more about the topic because I know firsthand how this topic has influenced my perspective in the classroom and also how important the partnership between professionals and families are, in regard to the whole being of the child. I also chose this topic because I wanted to research various ways to initiate and offer continual support to diverse families and build strong lasting relationships with them.
From completing the research charts thus far, I have the opportunity to learn new words that are associated with the research process. I believe that by learning these various words that I would be able to grow in this profession and also learn more new and exciting things dealing with the early childhood education field. I also believe I benefited greatly from learning about the high quality guidelines for analyzing research. The guidelines for me, gave me the stepping stone needed to find meaningful research information and be able to notice low quality information.
How do you research information and what are some things that you personally, look for first?
What benefits could research serve in your current or future position?

  1. Sha'Keema,

I've also gained knowledge about how to look for quality research papers. I would like to contribute to your fisrt question.
    When I'm doing research:

First- I look for an interesting topic

Second- read the abstaract and if i like it or not then I proceed reading the whole paper

Third- I read the method, skipping the non-sense charts (honestly)

    Fourth: conclusion

I do all this using the research databases from the Walden library. When I'm not using Walden's databases I always look for a .edu, .gov, or .org domain.

  2. Hey! We have similiar topics. I too would like to know more about those positive relationships (more specifically the parents relationship with child) and how it affects them in the classroom (as far as behavior, academics, etc.). And to add to that, I agree that this past week has indeed been an eye-opener when picking "quality" sources. Hopefully, this will guide us into "good" research. Good luck with your chosen topic. And please share any relevant resources you come across! :)

  3. Hello Sha’Keema,
Truly, this is a topic that needs to be explored. In schools, everyone speaks about diversity as if talking about if made it disappear. In fact, I never heard or thought about putting diversity and building relationships together when it totally makes sense. I have a similar question asking what schools and educators can do to fully understand each of their families with an emphasis on immigrant families. Building relationships with families from diverse backgrounds requires skills and determination. Your research findings will be very helpful to educators. Since our topics seem to dovetail, I am sure I will have questions to ask you. Thank you in advance for accepting to answer them!

  4. Sha'Keema,
Very interesting post. It is so important as teachers that we include diversity in our curriculum, lesson planning, classroom setup, and even in labeling. In order to bridge the gap between home and school, teachers need to make the families feel welcomed and comfortable.
