Communication Blog Assignment

As a child and even today there has always been one person that I could always go to in time of need and whenever I needed advice and that person is my great-grandmother Mary Evans. My great-grandmother embodies strength and love. She taught me at an early age to always treat people with respect and to always fight for what I believe in. My great-grandma used her years growing up during segregation as stepping tools in the running and foundation of our family. I have never once heard her use one bad word or raise her voice, and just by being around her calms me.  My family and I know that although my great- grandmother’s voice is always calm and soft the why she speaks; it just commands us all to listen. I find that my great-grandmother’s overall presence allowed her to be effective when communicating with not only the family but others as well. My great-grandmother was and still is an advocate for respect and has always been honest even when times got rough. Although I am still learning and growing as an individual and professional I hope to one day have all the tools to be an effective communicator. As I continue through life and my education I try to embody some glimpse of my great-grandmother’s calming and caring spirit.

  1. I really enjoyed your blog. It is great to take the time to listen to older people because of all of the wisdom they have. You are definitely fortunate to have such wisdom that has caused you to excel in your life. She sounds like a great person to know. Communication is definitely needed today.

  2. I loved reading your blog because it is true that in sitting down and listening to older relatives/persons is truly enlightening. They have great stories because they have lived through the different phases of our history. My grandfather always kept our family history in his bible and always told us stories about his childhood and made sure we understand who our ancestors were. I truly believe that we must keep the lines of communication open with our own children/grandchildren.

  3. Your great grandmother sounds amazing! It is that presence that you feel in people, I wonder if that is taught or if she had to develop it? It sounds like she is still here, I would be so curious, or maybe it has been through her experiences during segregation. Thank you for sharing this story and I wish I could meet you great-grandmother!

  4. SkaKeema,
Your great grand mother sounds like a wonderful person. It is so refreshing to see that your grandmother is appreciated and is still considered noteworthy. She sounds like my mother. My mother had eight children; four boys and four girls in ten years. I never heard her raise her voice or uses profanity. She was a wonderful person, she passed in 1989. I hope that you let your great grand mother know how awesome she is and much you appreciates her.
